Kinja'd!!!

Here’s the latest drama from my neighborhood facebook group:

Grace posted a complaint about a nearby dog barking throughout the day. Weird to post it to facebook, but her complaint was reasonable and nicely written.

In response, there was some chatter, but also someone named Jason who said it was probably his new dog, and he would try to take care of it.

A few days go by and Jason posts an update because he had put a bark collar on to his dog. Apparently the dog escaped the yard and kept hiding, but was eventually found. He wasn’t complaining, just giving an update to show that he was attempting to deal with the problem.

That’s when things started to go south. Everyone came out of the woodwork to condemn Grace for complaining about the barking dog and that because of her the dog is being traumatized by wearing the bark collar. People living almost a block away were saying “the barking doesn’t bother me, so you shouldn’t have said anything! ” Jason tried to defuse the situation by saying Grace was reasonable and that his dog is always kind of stupid (his words) and escaping or hiding.

That’s where things stand right now, but I’m sure it’s not over yet. Meanwhile, I just want to be able to walk along the sidewalk without dodging huge piles of shit everywhere. Something tells me I won’t get that resolved on facebook....

Makes me wonder what my neighbors say or think about me and my new dog. He’s an adoption and he’s mostly really wonderful, but sometimes when I’m walking him he will just lose his shit if he sees another dog, or a squirrel, or a deer, or he even thinks he sees something. Of course other times he will see these things directly in front of his face and not care in the least. It’s rather unpredictable, but I hat e when it happens on our early morning or late night walks because I really don’t want to disturb my neighbors.

I also had a lady run to her front door and stare at me while I picked his poop up, just to make sure I was doing it.  Surprisingly, it seems like 99% of my neighborhood is onboard with cleaning up after their dogs as I rarely ever see random poops on our walks.

Wasn’t neighborhood life easier before the internet, when everyone just talked about people behind their backs like you’re supposed to do?

Or latest drama was over fencing. Some of our houses face toward the outside of the neighborhood. The HOA board voted to pay to have those neighbors’ fences that to achieve uniformity. That’s about five houses. Problem 1: two of those houses declined, as is their legal right, because they like their fairly new fencing. So uniformity is unattainable from the outset. The Board decided to go ahead with the other houses. Which leads to problem 2.

Two of those theee houses belong to Board members. So they just voted themselves new fences on HOA money. The treasurer objected to the appearance of conflict of interest and said so on the community forum. Now we have a “spirited” and strong willed community, many of them lawyers. The forum chat got pretty divisive and nasty for a couple of days.

My wife once posted about this putz that used to drive his LOOOOOUUUUD two-stroke up and down the street every Saturday at 2am, for 30-60 minutes. Others chimed in that they were hearing him all night as well. That’s when about some angry 2-wheeler folks came in and things went real south. Suggestions included “just wear ear plugs” to “loud bikes are for the safety of the rider” to “he must work the night shift you don’t know.” W hat job involves riding back and forth on the same block 15 times in an hour? Also, may I park my wheezy pickup outside your bedroom window at 2am and rev it every few minutes after I suggest you wear ear plugs? Why do I have a feeling that wouldn’t be acceptable for you...

But that was nothing compared to the time that my neighbor complained about a drug RV parked outside of their house, where the couple would fight and scream at night and leave trash on the street. She was called a heartless bitch and yadda yadda these people need a place to stay. Would these same people have this opinion if someone parked 12' from their home peddling drugs from an RV with a bent frame. DOUBT IT. But at least they can look like great humanitarians online to impress everyone :)

Ah, the barking dog, closely followed by the “clean up after your pets!” threads for neighborhood groups. As the drilling for numerous fracking sites nearby commences,  our neighborhood Nextdoor threads should be a hoot.

You have my sympathies.

My dog is batshit crazy and her prey drive is unstoppable. Sometimes — sommmmmetimes — I come home and hear her barking, and wonder if she had been barking all day at everything, pondering if I’m the neighbor with the annoying dog...

My wife has a dog who likes to dumpster dive. I kept getting frustrated, so I bought a shock collar. The collar has a beep option and that dog will jump three feet in the air at just a beep; no shock necessary.

One day I had the dog out with the collar on and one of those dog people asked whether I’d ever tried out the collar on myself. I answered, without missing a beat, “No, because I always come when my wife calls me and I don’t eat cat poop.”

They’re cute, they’re loyal, they’re funny, they stink, and they’re animals . They aren’t little furry people.

I would never submit to an HOA. Never, ever, ever.

Sometimes. But sometimes he doesn’t. I’m just looking for a little consistency here...

But really, I get that he’s an animal and has a mind of his own.  I just want to be a good neighbor.  There’s a few other dogs in the neighborhood that go nuts when we walk by as well, but there’s plenty that just walk on by quietly and don’t pay us another mind while he’s losing his mind.

That’s cool. So you just don’t buy a house in one.

The frustrating thing are those people who buy a house in the neighborhood, sign the agreement,  and then won’t abide by the rules or pay their dues. That’s not protesting. That’s being an ass.

People need to chill the fuck out about those collars. It’s not a tazer, it doesn’t even hurt. It’s an uncomfortable in voluntary twitch but not painful.

I manage the e-mail account for my HOA (fml) and had someone e-mail a complaint about a barking dog (all night) asking if we could do anything about it. I forwarded the message to the rest of the board, and one of the board members thought they knew who it was, and said she would contact them. She did, they started bringing their dog in at night ( wth people!?!) and all was right with the world again.

My neighborhood has issues, but our HOA isn’t one of them IMO, the problems are some neighbors with ZERO respect for others.

I used to have a dog and I always cleaned up after her. I had one particularly annoying neighbor, a jogger, who watched me pick up dog poo, then asked me if I was going to clean up an other mound of dog poo that was nearby and obviously not from my pup . I looked him in the face and said “I just assumed that was jogger shit.” He never spoke to me again.

When I was in the Army, one day, my first sergeant asked me about something he’d asked me to do earlier. I had not yet complied. And after asking me, he proclaimed, “And don’t tell me it slipped something you ain’t got!”

Well played! What gets me is idiot dog people who put their dogs’ poop in a plastic bag, then leave the bagged poop beside the trail.

He can cut back the branches that hang over into his yard.  At least he could over here. But that’s pretty much it.

Not 100% relevant but any conversation of dog poo always reminds me of this calvin and hobbes. I aspire to be this level of smartass someday.

So me and my wife will leave the dog poop bag on the side of a trail when doing an out and back when the dog poops in the fist 10 minutes of hiking, and we pick it up on the way back for disposal . The last thing I want to do is carry 1 lb of dog shit for 2 hours.
